Halbauer has been doing well in the last couple of seasons, but it's important to understand that the level of clay competition in North America is not as high as in Europe, which is why she is overrated relative to other players, regularly competing in Europe. The American spends the current series of tournaments without brilliance, losing in rounds 1-2 for several competitions in a row.
Middendorf has not shown her best in the last month either, proving that the first professional year is a successful one for her. She has decent statistics, as well as successful performances against opponents of the top 500 ITF level. The tournament in Germany is her home, which is likely to give her an additional advantage before the meeting with Halbauer.
